Reception pupils settle into life at Newington primary

Being creative is among the fun lessons being enjoyed by the new Reception year group that joined Newington Community Primary School this term.

A range of activities such as the Read Write Inc phonic programme and creating a weekly sound video are quickly becoming routine after just a few short weeks as girls and boys experience the New to Newington pathway into education.

Natasha Musselwhite is one of the Reception teachers. She explained: “Together the children and staff have loved finding out all the fun things we can do at school.

“We have particularly enjoyed getting creative using recyclable materials and paints, singing, and finding out all the different ways we can transport water.

“The children have embraced circle time, allowing them to learn our class rules and also get to know each other. We have been exploring our emotions and have loved reading the story The Colour Monster alongside this.

“They have been busy exploring their new environments and building relationships with their new teachers and making new friends. We are excited for a wonderful year of learning together.”

The school’s Nursery has also enjoyed a successful start to term with children as young as three-years-old taking big steps into structured play and learning during their daily sessions. These include talking and speech development, story time, group and individual activities, and basic social skills.

Head Teacher Hannah Tudor said: “Nursery and Reception are crucial building blocks for the future of our children’s education. It is a challenging time for children and their families but they all adapt so well and settle very quickly.

“In our experience they show marked development socially and educationally quite quickly. We work closely with our parents as the important relationship between home and school develops.

“Exploring learning through fun gives our young pupils a solid framework to build on as they broaden their skills, increase in confidence, and become a vital part of our Newington community.”
