Double Trophy Triumph for Soccer Stars

Newington Community Primary School boys and girls proved they are Thanet soccer supremoes when they achieved a double whammy success.

In the girls' DW Trophy Football Tournament at Upton Junior School in Broadstairs, Newington won their matches against Palm Bay, Garlinge, Drapers Mill, and Holy Trinity & St Johns. They drew with St Saviour's and hosts Upton.

This put Newington in second place in the pool and won them a final showdown with St Ethelbert's' who they defeated 2-0 with great goals from Maddie and Annelyse as part of a fine team effort to lift the trophy.

In the boys Super Saturday Football Tournament, also at Upton, Newington were among 35 Year 5 and Year 6 teams from 22 schools taking part.

In the first round they played against Upton 1, Birchington 1, Salmestone 2 and Holy Trinity Ramsgate, winning all their games except against Upton.

Once the points were collated they were placed in one of seven cup rounds, progressing to the Thanet Primary Schools Football Association  Shield round against Upton 2, Garlinge 2, Dame Janet and Chilton 2.

It all rested on the last match with Chilton needing to draw to take the title and Newington needing to win, which they did with a fantastic goal from Khian deciding a dramatic game 1-0.

Head Teacher Cliff Stokes said: "Our soccer sides have brought home two trophies from two well-run and highly competitive local tournaments against strong opposition."

"We pride ourselves on being Newington Winners in all aspects of school and community life, and we have demonstrated that on the sports field. Well done to all our players and coaches."
